NEWS: Lion spotted in Yorkshire

Earlier today there were reported sightings if a lion and/or a lion cub in the small Yorkshire town of Shepley, near Huddersfield. passengers were, briefly, not allowed to leave trains at the town's station, though they were allowed to board trains!

Whether the sighting is genuine, a spoof or simply an over-reaction only time will tell, but it isn't the only sighting of a big cat in mainland Britain:

*In the 1950s, there were reported sightings if the Surrey Puma and the Fen Tiger.

*In 1963, residents of Shooter's Hill in London, reported seeing a cheetah and in 1964 a cheetah was also spotted in Norfolk.

*During the 1970s, there were many sightings of the Beast of Exmoor and the Sheppey Panther.

*In the early 1980s, there was the Kellas Cat in Scotland, and that was actually shot in 1984.

*Since 1992, there have been fairly regular reported sightings of the Beast of Bodmin and the Galloway Puma.

So now we add the Shepley Lion.

Where do these big cats come from? If they are genuine, and that's a big if, they are most likely to be captive animals let free by owners unable to cope with maintaining them any more.
